In this really simple Flash tutorial, I will show you how to create rough text effect using the mask. You will also learn how to use Align Pane, how to cut the shape using the Selection Tool (V) and more.

Example:

Step 1

Open Flash, press Ctrl+J key(Document Properties) and set Width to 300px and Height to 100px. Frame rate set to 30fps ( frames per second) and press ok.

Step 2

Double click on layer 1 to change its name in text. Take the Text Tool (A), go to the Properties Panel (Ctrl+F3) below the stage and choose font, size and color which you like, and type any text. For this example I'll type of course toxiclab.org.

While the text is still selected, go to the Align Panel (shortcut: Ctrl+K). Then, do the following in the Align panel:

a) Make sure that the Align/Distribute to Stage button is turned on
b) Click on the Align horizontal center button and
c) Click the Align vertical center button.

Step 3

Create a new layer above layer text and name it effect.

Step 4

Lock layer text, select layer effect, take the Rectangle Tool (R), for Stroke color choose No color and draw a "rectangle" like it is shown on the picture below.

Step 5

After that, take the Selection Tool (V), click once on "rectangle" to select it and go to the Align Panel (shortcut: Ctrl+K). Then, do the following in the Align panel:

a) Make sure that the Align/Distribute to Stage button is turned on
b) Click the Align vertical center button.

Step 6

Take the Selection Tool (V), select a little piece of rectangle and press delete on the keyboard. If you don't understand, see the picture below.

Step 7

After you have done that, you'll need to get something like this:

Step 8

Select now that "rectangle" and press F8 key (Convert to symbol), to convert that "rectangle" into a Graphic Symbol.

Step 9

Click on frame 30 of layer text and press F5. After that click on frame 30 of layer effect and press F6. Then select the "rectangle" and using "drag and drop technique" or by arrows on the keyboard place the  "rectangle" on the position like it is shown on the picture below.

Step 10

Go back on frame one of layer effect, open the Properties Panel (Ctrl+F3) and for Tween choose Motion.

Step 11

Click on frame 70 on layer effect and press F6 key. After that, click on frame 100 and press again F6 key and place  the "rectangle" on the position like it is shown on the picture below.

Step 12

Go back on frame 70 of layer effect, open the Properties Panel (Ctrl+F3) and for Tween choose Motion.

Step 13

After that click on frame 100 of layer text and press F5.

Step 14

Only one thing that we must to do, is select effect layer and convert it to a mask by right-clicking on the effect layer and selecting Mask.

We're done!

Enjoy!
